My name is Carl Eaton and I am the manager of a newly formed football team for adults with learning disabilities. We have only been in existence since June 2009 but boast a membership of 30 players. We currently hold our training sessions at Glenburn Training College on a Thursday evening 6-8 and we also have an outdoor session on Glenburn fields Sunday 2-4 (weather permitting). The age range is 18+ and all are welcome regardless of ability. Our aim is to provide football to all adults with a learning disability in a safe and friendly environment. Our club is not only unique to Skelmersdale but also West Lancs and as each week passes the phone continues to ring and the popularity of the club goes from strength to strength. The club has also been visited by the Special Olympics and it is our aim to become part of that organisation in the future.
The Men-Aces were also honoured by the Skelmersdale Advertiser Sports Award, where they won the Disability Inclusion Trophy and my daughter Samantha Eaton also known as mini coach was awarded the Unsung Hero Award. I myself was recently awarded the Community Hero Award but the heroes are the Skem Men-Aces. The club has also just recently become recognised as a Charter Standard club.
We have had the support of several celebrities including Alan Kennedy, Joe Parkinson and Bill Kenwright, who made us guest of honour at the Liverpool Empire for his own production of Scrooge the musical, featuring the legend Tommy Steele
Our thanks also goes to Unsworth Builders Skelmersdale, Smith and Sons Property Consultants Birkenhead, Tawd Vale Lions Club, Graylaw Freight Group, but especially coaches, parents, carers and supporters.
Last but by no means least, we must say a huge thank you to our main supporter and sponsor Mr. Roy Caine of Caine Express Haulage Skelmersdale, in appreciation of his outstanding contributions and continuous support to the guys. Roy was recently awarded with the title of honourable president of the Skem Men-Aces and the club our proud to not just have Roy as a sponsor but above all else, a true gentleman and friend. Thank you Roy. God Bless.
